![]() ![]() Some of them even have some fun interactions, like when two Cave Men run into each other and start striking up a spit-soaked conversation of gibberish. Cave drawings on the walls of the Dwelling foreshadow what’s to come, enemies will amusingly trip on bars of gold or discarded arrows, and just in general, characters are much more expressive. Spelunky 2 definitely looks much better than its 12-year-old predecessor – the sprite-based graphics are all 4K-ready and animations are smooth – but rather than making a big, unnecessary departure from the charming art style, Mossmouth instead gave the worlds and inhabitants of Spelunky 2 more personality, and the results are great. Allowing you to have some control over your run based on which areas you want to hit and which secrets you want to try to uncover – once you learn them – is a great way to build on the already incredibly personalized experience of playing through your own randomly generated levels.Įach of those different areas has a completely different and distinctive appearance to it to accompany its own set of unique enemies and hazards. What’s great is that every path offers its own risks and rewards: I’ve had a much higher success rate of making it through Volcana, but find myself better prepared for the later levels whenever I manage to make it through the Jungle thanks to some of the rewarding secrets unique to that level. Runs continue to diverge even further from there in ways that I don’t want to spoil, but rest assured, each area is jam packed with its own set of mysteries, NPCs, and hidden exits that all dramatically impact how each run plays out. With water, this isn’t that big of a deal, but it’s a huge hazard when you’re trying to make your way through Volcana and have to think twice about using a bomb when there’s lava nearby. In Spelunky 2, however, that liquid will spill out naturally and affect whatever it comes into contact with. In the first Spelunky, when you bomb a pool of water or lava at the base, the water just magically disappears, allowing you to safely collect whatever was at the bottom of the pool. Instead, you start at the Dwelling (which is Spelunky 2’s version of the mines), and from there you’re able to choose where you go next: take the path on the left and you’ll travel to the jungle take the path on the right, and instead you’ll have to contend with Volcana, a new fiery area that takes full advantage of Spelunky 2’s new fluid dynamics system with deadly lava pools that spill out of control with just one errant explosion. It’s also more reasonable than its predecessor in that shopkeepers won’t immediately turn hostile towards you if a random act of God causes trouble in their shop, and you’re given much more light in the notorious dark levels this time around, making them a little more forgiving.īut the biggest difference in Spelunky 2 is that it is no longer a linear progression of levels that has you going from mines, to jungle, to caves, to temple, and for the truly hardcore, to Hell. It doesn’t sound like much but it’s a godsend in a game where your very limited health is persistent from level to level and the only other reliable way of restoring it is by locating and bringing a lovable animal friend to the exit (alive). ![]() The most substantial leg up is that, if you’re okay with being a soulless monster, you can bomb turkeys for life-restoring cooked meat. Mossmouth does do a few small things to make the early goings of Spelunky 2 at least a tiny bit easier than the original. You get just the right amount of mid-air control to make pinpoint-accurate jumps with great speed, and just the right amount of leeway on timing to easily make jumps in tight spaces that would be extremely frustrating in a lot of platformers. It helps, too, that the controls are a dream. This feeling of getting better, and knowing that it's not because of anything but your own skills and knowledge, is incredibly powerful, and it makes Spelunky 2 one of the most rewarding video games I’ve ever played. But even though your character doesn’t get any stronger between runs, your brain is continually armed with new experience that can help prevent that same death from happening again… or at least if it does, you know it’ll be your own fault. ![]() “Dying is punishing, yes, as it causes you to restart all the way at the beginning and lose whatever powerful items you might have obtained in your previous life.

![]() When you add the suffix -ing to a word that ends in “ie,” modify the ending of the word so that it ends in “y.” Examples:Ĭreating adjectives using suffixes Suffix (list) In order to add a suffix, it is sometimes necessary to alter the letter “y” that is found at the end of the word to the letter “i.” Examples: When attaching a suffix, there are a few instances in which the letter “y” must be maintained at the end of the word. When adding a suffix to a word, there are a few instances in which the final “e” of the word remains intact. This is true whether it’s a vowel or a consonant. ![]() The rule that dictates whether a word’s last silent “e” should be dropped or not depends on the letter that comes first in the suffix. However, this requirement is only applicable in specific circumstances. ![]() When adding suffixes to some base words that end with a consonant, it is necessary to double the last letter. The following is a list of rules governing suffixes in grammar: 1. There are two types of suffixes: vowel suffixes and consonant suffixes. They are put to use in the creation of new words as well as in the modification of the meanings of existing terms. The English language places a strong emphasis on the use of suffixes. What are the grammar rules that govern suffixes? When appended to the end of a root word, certain suffixes allow for the spelling of the root word to remain unchanged. It can also indicate whether or not the word is a noun, verb, adverb, or adjective. ![]() Take, for example:Ī word’s suffix can also indicate how it will be employed in a sentence. A root word is an autonomous word that may be used on its own. Suffixes are typically added to the end of words to change or expand their meaning.Ī suffix is an additional word that is added to the end of a root word in order to create new words. The best strategy to increase your vocabulary is to become familiar with various suffixes. Suffix word examples Why are suffixes used? In contrast, there is only one kind of prefix, but there are two kinds of suffixes: inflectional and derivational.A prefix can alter the meaning, and a suffix can likewise modify the meaning besides, they can help format tenses. The prefix appears first in any word, and the suffix is always inserted at the very end.A suffix, on the other hand, is a collection of letters that are appended to the end of a basic word. A root word’s prefix is any set of letters that appears before the root word itself.A quick look reveals the following differences between a prefix and a suffix: The meaning of the base word, also known as the root word, can be altered by using one of these affixes. Nevertheless, prefixes and suffixes are both considered to be elements of affixes. “Pain” is a noun, and “painful” is an adjective. In addition, the meaning of the word shifts when a suffix is added. On the other hand, the word “painful” is formed by adding the suffix “ful” to the beginning of the word, which results in a new meaning. Patient is synonymous with patience, while impatient conveys the opposite connotation of that word. The prefix “im” affects the meaning of the word “patient” and appears in this context at the beginning of the word. On the other hand, the term “ suffix” refers to a group of letters that is added to the end of a word. Having said that, it completely alters the definition of the word. Difference between a prefix and a suffixĪ prefix is a letter or group of letters that is attached to the beginning of a word. Suffixes can also be used in English to show if a word is a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb. A suffix is a series of letters that is added to the end of a root word and modifies or expands the meaning of the original word. The greatest concern Safe Haven evokes is for the innocents around her who may suffer at the hands of the brutish police detective (David Lyons) chasing her. Not to heap praise on Sleeping with the Enemy, but of all the movies Roberts made in her 20s, none exploited her talent for displaying vulnerability more effectively than this TV-movie woman-in-peril thriller. ![]() The movies are so alike it’s a wonder someone hasn’t sued, although it seems unlikely that Hough is on the kind of trajectory Roberts, fresh off Pretty Woman, was at that point. In Safe Haven, Lasse Hallstrom’s second adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks’ book (the first was 2010’s Dear John) cute Katie (Julianne Hough) goes through almost exactly the same motions, although absent any compulsive towel straightening and with the addition of a supernatural twist. The movie was an adaptation of a novel by Nancy Prince. Living under an assumed identity, Laura finds love in a town bucolic enough to have a Fourth of July day parade, although the bad husband eventually shows up and memorably tidies up her bathroom (most women dream of this) before tries to kill her and her new beau. His fans no doubt will swoon over this tear-jerking finale, even while critics stare at the screen with jaws open in disbelief.Follow 1991 film Sleeping with the Enemy featured Julia Roberts as Laura Burney, a nice young woman trying to restart her life after escaping an abusive and controlling husband. This last-minute twist is shameless and stupefying, but it demonstrates why Sparks has an army of fervent readers. It does, however, have one sentimental surprise at the end that testifies to Sparks’ storytelling shrewdness. The seaside locations are tenderly evoked by cinematographer Terry Stacey and production designer Kara Lindstrom, but the film isn’t visually memorable or dramatically vibrant. It’s hard to see much evidence of the talent that brightened his My Life as a Dog, The Cider House Rules or even Chocolat. The picture is certainly competent, but a dozen other journeyman directors could have executed this piece just as efficiently. Hallstrom’s direction is generally lackluster. Perhaps the biggest disappointment is that Hallstrom, who burst into prominence with his fine direction of child actors in the 1985 Swedish film My Life as a Dog, fails to draw vivid performances from the two actors cast as Alex’s children. Hough, better known as a singer and dancer than a dramatic actress, is likably spunky, but Duhamel fades into the background, and there are no lively supporting players in the ensemble. To put it as charitably as possible, the actors in Safe Haven are not in the same league. The best Sparks movie, The Notebook, had the strongest cast, with talented newcomers Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams balancing seasoned veterans James Garner and Gena Rowlands. They All Do’Ī related problem is the casting. VIDEO: Nicholas Sparks on ‘Safe Haven’s’ Box-Office Prospects: ‘It’ll Do Fine. When her nemesis finally arrives in North Carolina, the film does develop some effectively suspenseful moments. ![]() But the gauzy romantic interludes prove to be something of a yawn. To jack up the tension, director Lasse Hallstrom (who also helmed Dear John) keeps intercutting scenes of a grim, hard-drinking Boston cop ( David Lyons) determined to track Katie down. In addition, the two main characters are such paragons that there are no real psychological impediments to their union. Still, this complication isn’t especially well developed in the screenplay by Dana Stevens and Gage Lansky. Alex’s daughter, who barely remembers her mother, warms to Katie immediately, but her older brother has a harder time with his father’s new relationship. The first problem with the film is that the burgeoning romance is too flat to generate intense audience empathy. Before long, however, a nasty blast from Katie’s past arrives to threaten her newfound bliss. Because of their troubled histories, they approach each other warily, but there’s little doubt about where their relationship is headed. There she meets a sensitive widower, Alex ( Josh Duhamel), raising two young children on his own. In this case our heroine, Katie ( Julianne Hough), runs away from a toxic marriage in Boston, boards a bus and, on a whim, gets off in a small seaside community in North Carolina. The mystery plot recalls a 1991 Julia Roberts movie, Sleeping With the Enemy, in which the heroine fled an abusive husband and tried to reinvent herself in a brand-new community. This potential benefit might seem extremely appealing to many African nations attempting to build their economic systems. Since English is the most spoken language in the world, learning this language enables the developing nations to maximize their production and trade power by being able to communicate with other regions around the globe. Rational choice theorist Francois Grin suggests that societies will choose to speak a language that maximizes their economic wealth, balancing the benefits of knowing the language with the costs of integrating the language into their culture (Grin 34). Many African countries are moving towards monolingualism in English in order to accelerate economic growth by allowing native people to communicate more effectively with other nations and transnational corporations (Brock-Utne 70). One example of how monolingualism leads to economic growth comes from the field of development economics. A single language also helps companies in service industries (anything from food service to technology consulting) more easily communicate with their customers, and helps industrial and commercial firms better communicate with those who buy their products. In multilingual countries, workers learn the national language or lingua franca in order to increase their marketability to employers (Grin). Just as monolingualism in education makes the educational process more efficient, monolingualism in the workforce benefits the economy by allowing employers to use only a single language to communicate more efficiently with their workers. ![]() A common global language would also facilitate intercultural understanding in education and allow for a free exchange of ideas from around the globe. In many non-Anglophone European countries, English is already the medium of instruction for science and mathematics courses in secondary schools and universities (Coleman 6). Learning a national or international language instead of an ethnic or regional one opens students up to a wider world of experiences, and also increases their opportunities for future employment. Students will be more likely to understand a commonly spoken language and there will be a greater abundance of teachers able to teach in more major languages. Therefore, for educational purposes, it is beneficial to teach students national or international standard languages. Currently, eighty percent of people speak just one percent of the world’s languages (Erard), and by the turn of the century, half of the languages in the world will most likely be extinct (Anderson). The world is transitioning from a multitude of languages to domination by just a few large international languages, such as English, Chinese, and Arabic. This paper will demonstrate that monolingualism benefits society by strengthening education, increasing economic efficiency, and creating a sense of common identity.įirst of all, the trend towards monolingualism can be beneficial in education, as major languages are used almost universally to teach people around the world. ![]() ![]() As language is the primary means of communication between humans, the adoption of a common language is central to cooperation between ethnic groups in the domestic sphere, and between nations in the international sphere. The global trend towards the adoption of a single language is pervasive on both the national and international levels and has occurred in tandem with economic development and the political consolidation of unified nation-states.
